MICKLEMS FARM SUMMER SCHOOL: SUNFLOWERS IN INK & WATERCOLOUR
Friday 25th July
Tutor: Elizabeth Baldin
10:00 - 16:00
Level: Beginner and up
Micklems Farm Summer School: As some of you may know, sadly Marlborough Summer School isn’t going ahead this year. We’ve teamed up with some of the tutors who normally teach at the Marlborough Summer School to bring you some exciting one and two day workshops. All of our Summer School workshops are being held in the barn, which is up a flight of stairs.
Sunflowers in watercolour and ink with Elizabeth Baldin. This course is perfect for artists of all levels who want to explore the beauty of sunflowers through watercolour and ink. To ease yourselves into this challenging medium you can try combing watercolours with acrylic inks which will do some of the groundwork for you, so you can then be free and expressive with the watercolour paint. You’ll learn essential techniques like colour mixing, layering, and loose brush work to create stunning, expressive floral paintings. Guided step by step, you’ll capture the warmth, texture, and radiance of sunflowers while enhancing your artistic skills. Join us and bring the joy of sunflowers to life with your brush and palette.
What to bring:
A packed lunch
Brushes
Sable watercolour brushes are best but pricey, so I use a lot of synthetics these days as the quality is so much better than it used to be. The lower price means that you can afford to buy more sizes.
SAA Silver all rounder brush size 10, or Ken Bromley Artists’ Value Round Profile Brush size 12
SAA Silver flatmate brush 0.5inch
1 inch flat brush (any make)
Paints
Here are the colours we will be using:
Cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna or sepia, winsor violet (dioxazine).
If you are buying colours individually, watercolours in tubes are better value in the long run. I use
Winsor and Newton artists quality tubes, but recently I have been buying Jackson’s own brand as they are very reasonably priced and good quality, although they don’t have as many colours as other brands.
If you prefer to buy pans (small dry squares of colour) it is better to get them as a complete set in a portable palette. Rosa Gallery watercolour sets are very good value and come in a variety of different sized sets and can be cought online from Ken Bromley’s art supplies.
Bockingford 300gsm Glued Watercolour Pad 14”x 10” (360 x 260mm) this is a reasonable quality paper in a glued block that won’t cockle as you paint on it.
