Micklems Farm Summer School: As some of you may know, sadly Marlborough Summer School isn’t going ahead this year. We’ve teamed up with some of the tutors who normally teach at the Marlborough Summer School to bring you some exciting one and two day workshops. All of our Summer School workshops are being held in the barn, which is up a flight of stairs.

Be inspired by the abundance of summer when the fields are full of wild flowers and our gardens are in full bloom! Capture the freshness, vivacity and colour of flowers in the garden or wider landscape with a variety of painting techniques.

We will initially be looking at shape and form, starting with exercises to select bold shapes and colour, followed by some brushwork exercises to create stylised leaves and foliage. We will then explore mark-making, pattern and layering to capture the impression of a tangle of flowers & foliage. Throw in a little bit of simple printing, a scattering of paper collage and a flourish of decorative spattering to create a vibrant piece of work. This project is suitable for both acrylics and/or watercolours (see materials list). Absolutely no experience needed for this fun and informal workshop…..bring a big apron and prepare to play!

What to bring:

  • Any heavy-weight papers (approx. 350gsm or heavier) you would like to work on e.g watercolour / mixed media paper. You can also work on canvas / canvas board or watercolour board depending on your media

  • Kitchen roll, scissors pencil, biro, glue stick or PVA / Acrylic matt medium

  • Apron or old clothes

  • Acrylics or watercolours – primary colours plus white (If using watercolour please bring a tube of white gouache) Magenta or permanent rose are useful when painting flowers.

  • Mixing palette – old plate or tear-off palette is fine

  • Brushes – whatever you have….a large flat brush and a couple of round brushes would be useful

  • If you have paint markers and /or oil pastels or Neocolours please bring them along – useful, but not essential (don’t buy specially)

  • A packed lunch

The tutor will bring ‘found objects’ to print with but if you have anything that makes good patterns feel free to bring it

Included on the day:
