Micklems Farm Summer School: As some of you may know, sadly Marlborough Summer School isn’t going ahead this year. We’ve teamed up with some of the tutors who normally teach at the Marlborough Summer School to bring you some exciting one and two day workshops. All of our Summer School workshops are being held in the barn, which is up a flight of stairs.

Using a combination of fibres, threads and a variety of fine materials students will create their own unique fabric. Starting with a base of hessian they will build up a surface using bonding, hand stitch and finish with a layer of machine stitch. The hand stitch will be bold and fluid using strips of fabric, wools, ribbons and threads. A basic knowledge of sewing will be useful. The machine stitching can be free machining or simple running or zigzag stitching depending on the experience of the individual. There will be step by step demonstrations and a set of written instructions.

Students will make a small piece of finished fabric and make it up into a phone case, a little book or a needle case.

What to bring:

  • A packed lunch

  • Sewing machine

  • Free machining foot if you have one

  • Sewing kit

  • Large sewing needle with a sharp point

  • Small amounts of colourful fabrics to use as a base. Fine fabrics like gauze, scrim, fine cottons, chiffon. You will be sewing through hessian + bondaweb + the fabrics with a large needle. Try to bring a variety of fine fabrics just in case some are not easy to stitch into in this way.

  • Wools and thick threads in similar colours to your fabrics for stitching into them.

  • Some machine threads in colours that complement the fabric and wool you have

  • Ruler

  • Marker pen

Included on the day:

  • Any materials not specified for students to bring

  • Expert tuition

  • 1 to 1 guidance

  • Detailed demonstrations

  • A selection of tea, freshly brewed coffee, biscuits and delicious cakes. If you have any specific dietary requirements or allergies, please feel free to bring along your own provisions/milk alternatives etc.

And of course you take your wonderful creations from the day. If you share any photographs of your day here and/or your finished work, we’d love to see them so please tag us @micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops or use the hashtag #micklemsfarmcreativeworkshops.
