Dahlias are fabulous plants. They start flowering in July and continue through till October. There’s a great range of colours, different shapes of flower and a variety of plant heights. In this unique, practical, hands-on 2.5hr workshop Chris Harper is going to share how we grow dahlias at Micklems Farm, so that you can achieve great results when you grow your own.
The session will start with tea or coffee and a biscuit or 2 followed a brief talk about the history of dahlias and general advice on growing them. You’ll then be shown how to sow dahlia seeds, plant up tubers into pots and take cuttings from tubers that we have started into growth earlier in the year - all of which you’ll have to take home.
We’ll finish off with an outside demo showing how to plant out your dahlias followed by a Q&A session over more refreshments. During the workshop we will be working with a choice of the Karma Series of dahlias (except for the seeds) which have been specially bred in Holland to provide long stemmed flowers with a good vase life. You’ll go home with; a pot with seed sown in it, further seeds to plant at home, a tuber to plant out and cuttings you’ve taken on the day.
What to bring:
gardening clothes (ones you don’t mind getting a bit mucky)
gloves
We will have additional tubers for sale at very competitive prices.
