GLASS FUSING - HARLEQUIN COASTERS AND PLATTER
Saturday 8th February
Tutor: Shirley Eccles
10:00 - 16:00
Level: All levels
This workshop will introduce you to the fundamental concepts of creating glass objects in a kiln. Experiment with coloured art glass materials and design a lovely set of Harlequin coasters. We will focus on pattern, colour and design.
Project 1: We will start with a quick tutorial on glass cutting and suitable tools. We will look at examples and discuss how glass reacts when fired in a kiln. Guidance on design ideas and use of colour will be covered and we will discuss how to create a theme within our set of coasters. You will then be able to work with a selection of coloured sheet glass to design your own unique set of four Harlequin coasters.
Project 2: You will learn techniques to design your own sheet of art glass. For this you will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of glass materials confetti, stringers, frits etc. This will then be used to form a slumped bowl or platter. This project will include two firing processes: fusing and slumping. Suitable moulds will be discussed and prepared for the slumping process. The difference between fusing and slumping will be explained as well as the firing schedules for glass.
