CONTEMPORARY EMBROIDERY

CONTEMPORARY EMBROIDERY
Friday 16th May
Tutor: Angie Mills
10:00 - 16:00
Level: Intermediate - you must have experience in hand stitching.
During the last cold, grey and wet winter, I began a wonderful new embroidery concept which proved to be utterly therapeutic in front of the log fire in the grey afternoons and evenings. It changed my winter days and it can be enjoyed throughout all the seasons, so I want to share it with you too.
The absorbing technique was inspired by the pretty round sea creature skeletons called Sand Dollars, which are found bleached and dry on tropical beaches. We use coloured felted woollen fabrics or woollen felt itself, cut out into 2” circles, and hand appliqued onto a good base fabric of woollen felt, or felted wool, (even sturdy linen) in our chosen colours, and then proceed to embellish each circle with personal designs in beautiful chosen embroidery threads of differing gauges producing fascinating patterns, all with relatively simple embroidery stitches; The simplicity lends itself to absolute beginners, as well as to more experienced embroiderers, and more advanced stitches can be added as desired.
For my one day workshop, I have designed a small and easily achievable project for you to complete and take home – a pretty Felt Needlecase, in several colourways for you to choose from, in which to keep your new special Needles, which you will use on the day. You will learn all the basics you need to expand to bigger projects as gifts to give or to decorate your homes or clothing.
All the materials you will need will be provided – including, in a selection of different colourways, your unadorned needle case base, a selection of felt circles, needles, pins and beautiful threads, but you will need to bring:
Small embroidery scissors for trimming threads
Small stitch unpicker (if you have one)
A packed lunch
I shall offer stitch ideas, demos, and personal one to one instruction, with printed diagrams for you.
So let’s all escape for a day to Micklems Farm to discover a beautiful and addictive Winter-Weather Blues- Banisher this Autumn. I look forward to meeting you all!
